My first love in Ateneo

Last Wednesday, I received a text message that the editorial board race results are out. Well, actually, I received a text message saying that Acor is the new Editor-in-Chief (Congrats, dear!).

A year ago, that message would have caused my heart to beat a hundred times faster. But this time was different, because I withdrew from the race. The feeling was just neutral; I just wanted to find out who won. The emotions heightened at some point, but that's entirely a different topic.

Freshman year began with me trudging along a rocky road. Self-esteem was kind of at its lowest, I was afraid that receiving another rejection would cause me to forever doubt my capabilities.

Still, despite this, I applied for The GUIDON. I've been part of a school paper since time immemorial, and so I knew that I won't forgive myself if I don't give it a shot. When the results of the application were posted, I was preparing myself for a heartbreaking news . . but luckily, I got in.

My level of self-confidence is not difficult to raise at all. With that, I became so proud of myself, disregarding all previous doubts. It's the first thing in Ateneo that made me feel like I am not a student lost in a population of smart, talented, and extraordinary people. It made taking up a course that was not fit for me tolerable; it compensated for my mediocre grades in classes that I didn't like. For the first time in my few months in college, I felt like I belong.

I was not able to bond with my then co-staffers because being the freshie that I was, my shyness overpowered me. Thank God for Tasha, my fellow freshie staffer, who was my partner in receiving the "You're a freshie" remarks of my editor. Of course he did not do it in an Im-looking-down-at-you manner; he just loved making fun of us (and he's just envious that we were still young and several opportunities still awaited us. Haha).

PJ Purganan was my very first Features editor. He taught me a lot, not only with regards to writing and editing; he taught me to believe in myself. I was so surprised that he trusted me to become editorial assistant early in my career stint as a Features staffer.

More than the delight of seeing my name in the byline, of being able to continue writing, of having an org that I can call home, The GUIDON has given me a new way of perceiving myself. Indeed, it was my first love in Ateneo. Despite all the hassles of hunting down interviewees, sorting out piles of research materials, beating the strict deadlines, I can't help but willingly give my commitment to the org.

Three years after, I'm still here, struggling with the publication that can so much be considered as a 6-unit course that I have to take semester after semester.

In my second year in The GUIDON, I decided to run for Features editor. Three of us actually did, and the competition was tough. Maybe I can say that I badly wanted the position. Every time my editor appoints me as editorial assistant, I enthusiastically do my job. I didn't care about sleepless nights; I didn't even care that it interfered with the only subject that I enjoyed studying for.

If I will try to find a reason why I only got a B in Accounting 15, it's because the 2nd batch of requirements for the EB race was due the same day as our 2nd (or 3rd?) long test. My blockmates in F2 has witnessed how out-of-touch I've been because the race seriously stole all my free time.

All hell broke loose when I found out the results, but that's not what I want to write about.

Junior year came, and of course, I re-applied as Features staffer. I couldn't leave the org, because after all, it's my first love. I, however, tried to channel my energy to other things as well. I joined a lot of organizations. I started with 9 orgs, and ended up being active in 6. I even had positions in 3.

Five months ago, I was so eager to end MECO's hell semester, but at the same time, I was dreading the coming of the new sem. Second sem means EB race. Second sem means I have to decide whether or not I will join again. Actually the question sprouted not because of the fear of losing; it's more of choosing between GUIDON and SPEED (editors are not allowed to be part of any other org's executive board).

I remember that Nish was having the same dilemma before - of whether he'll run for GUIDON or for another org. Having had an experience to run in the race, I advised him:

"Mahirap talaga, kasi may risk of being rejected. But, you might hate yourself if you don't try. Last year mo na eh. I lost in the race last year, and I cried so hard. I gave up a LOT of things just so I can run last year. But then, maybe I wasn't really ready yet. When you were asking me if I would run, and I was saying that I'm not sure, that was not entirely true. Oo, takot ulit ako ma-reject. But I won't forgive myself if I forego the opportunity."

"Napaisip rin ako nung sembreak eh. Kasi balak ko talagang mag-EB sa SPEED. Doon, mas kita ko yung results ng ginagawa ko. Appreciated lahat ng efforts. Unlike in GUIDON, hindi naman naa-appreciate ng mga Ateneans. SPEED, immediate yung fulfillment. Hindi ko kailangang magsubmit ng kung anu-anonghindi ganung kalaki yung uncertainty, mas ka-close ko yung mga tao. But then, when I think about it, GUIDON pa rin first love ko - kahit gaano pa kahirap, and gaano ka-uncertain. Saka talaga, kahit matalo, at least alam kong sinubukan ko ulit."

It seems like I swallowed everything I said, yet believe me, it took several brain-cell- burning sessions before I finally decided to do so.

There are three major reasons why I withdrew from the race.

First, I felt that my leadership skill is more needed in SPEED. It was Jun who triggered me into realizing this. "Isipin mo kung saan ka mas kailangan," he always says every time I'm torn in between two choices. I am a project-oriented person - both in acads and in orgs - and in the two SPEED projects that I handled this school year, I can say in confidence that I was able to do my job well. I know that I have the capability to guide new officers and to motivate old and new members alike into being more actively involved in SPEED.

Second, I was no longer enthusiastic in doing editorial work. I didn't want the position as badly as before. When I was appointed as editorial assistant last February, I was not motivated at all. Even though I knew exactly how I can excellently do the job, I still didn't do what needs to be done. I know, I'm sorry. My love for writing might just die if I were to edit every freaking article every freaking month! Well, not really. I also love editing, but it's writing that I'm really passionate about.

Third, I will have more time for other things if I won't be an editor. I can be an officer in several orgs; I can even start a new org. As I've been repeatedly saying here in my blog, I have a lot of plans. I just know that I won't be able to execute them if I have press worries all throughout the year. It's just too much of a hassle especially since my world no longer revolves around GUIDON. I have learned to love my other orgs as well.

When I found out the new set of Editorial Board, the "what-if's" predictably came to mind. Although it's very much uncertain if I will get the position if I continued participating in the race, I still felt, at least for a while, that I shouldn't have withdrawn.

I am happy with my decision nonetheless. I know that I'm going to enjoy working for and with SPEED, and writing for and with GUIDON.

To Kei, being the super student that you are, I believe that you can continue the Features tradition of being the best staff. Heck, I believe that you can even beat Lionel's ass! Hahaha, I'm kidding bossing! Seriously, if ever you'll need some help from your Features lola (salamat ha), I'm just four floors away.

since nina and anix tagged me, and since i realized that i do have more weird habits, i decided to make another list.

1) i sometimes sleep with my legs crossed (naka - de kuwatro).

2) i don't step on an escalator immediately. i have to see a whole "rectangle" pass before stepping. the people behind me usually get irritated with it.

3) when i eat in a restaurant, i unconsciously bring home the last tissue that i used. i may have shopped or watched a movie or whatever after eating, but i'd still have the tissue (with the restau's name/logo) with me when i get home.

4) there are exceptions, but i usually don't get nervous before performing or reciting or talking in front of many people. my heart races AFTER.

5) when i drink, i bite people. hahah. i also do even if i haven't drunk anything, but i'm more dangerous when alcohol-induced. LOL.

6) i can't fold my toes. okay, fold might not be the right term, but you got what i mean, right? haha. turns out that it's weird 'coz my friends are teasing me about it.

1) i always have to put contact lens on my right eye first. i used to do it so that i won't be confused with the difference in their grades. but now that they're already the same, the habit remains. if i happen to put the lens on my left eye first, i remove it and transfer it to the other eye. haha.

2) when my head aches, i pull my hair to "ease" the pain. there are also times when i ask others to pull it for me.

3) i always read and re-read my blog entry before posting it. after publishing, i check it again to look for the errors that i might've missed. i think it never happened that i didn't edit my entry even once. sometimes, i even re-structure my sentences just for graphic design's sake.

4) when i comb my hair, i do something which seems like i'm looking for split-ends (as slim said), but i'm not. i grab a few strands on the left part and comb the tip plenty of times while looking intently at it. argh, i can't describe it. haha, just look at me when i'm combing.

5) i usually don't follow the lines in papers, unless it's something that i have to submit. i can compress three lines in a single line (okay, redundant) because of my tiny handwriting. and i love folding papers into three parts (lengthwise) to save space.

6) when i'm bored, i write my name several times using different styles/kinds of lettering. as long as i still have space to write, i'd never get tired of writing my name. :p

1) someone already asked me this before. and i still have the same answer. it's bambie. :p
2) a surprise party! but i might throw one for myself so let me think of another one. hmmm.. a scrap book? haha.
3) i invented my own special condition. hehe. i want to be like reese witherspoon in just like heaven (through spirit, i can still see what my friends are doing/feeling, and then i can still talk to someone who could help bring me back to life).
4) a nice home, a steady business/career, and a happy family.
5) thanks for treating me like a princess. i'll miss you. :)

1. hmmm. it kind of sucks right now. i'll tell you about it when it gets exciting. :)
2. yes i have. i'll be taking acc30 because i'm shifting to meco.
3. aside from summer classes? out-of-town trips of course!
4. bs accountancy should've been my course. :p
